DenverBroncos-Logo 3Denver, Colo. — UPDATE: MONDAY NORTHWESTERN’S TREVOR SIEMIAN WAS NAMED STARTING QUARTERBACK FOR THE DENVER BRONCOS.COACH GARY KUBIAK MONDAY NAMED SIEMIAN TO START THE OPENING GAME AGAINST THE CAROLINA PANTHERS. NUMBER 13 WILL STEP INTO NUMBER 18’S SHOES.
The Denver Broncos beat back any threat from the LA Rams here at Sports Authority Field Saturday night, Aug. 27, carrying the game 17-9 and working on their quarterback question.
No one really cared who won the game; they were just looking at Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch.
Siemian carries the first half scoring and putting the Broncos in the lead in the last seconds of the half 10-9, and Lynch picks up the second half and scores a touchdown to make it 17-9.
The defense, led by Von Miller, held.
The two rookies played, and the quarterback with NFL experience, Mark Sanchez, was nowhere to be seen. Might be that last week’s astounding goal line fumbles by Sanchez had a bearing on his disappearance?
St Louis RamsThe Rams opened the first quarter with a field goal to take the lead 3-0, and as the second quarter opened Greg Zuerlein kicked another 38 yarder to make the score 6-0.
Siemian came back with a 18-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas to the 48 yard line, and was intercepted by the Rams’ Cody Davis. On his next possession Siemian drove down to the 6 yard line and hit Virgil Green for the touchdown.making the score 7-6.
Rams bounced back with quarterback Jared Goff, who worked down to a 48 yard Zuerlein field goal, which kicked them back into the lead, 9-7 with 52 seconds to halftime.
Siemian took over at his 19 yard line and calmly drove to within 50 yard field goal range, and with 18 seconds left Brandon McManus booted the Broncos to a 10-7 lead at halftime.
University of Tennessee’s Paxton Lynch launched a touchdown drive in the second possession of the third quarter and Ronnie Hillman made the TD to make the score 17-9, and the Bronco defense held.
No one scored in the fourth quarter.
So who will be the first string quarterback? I have always said Trevor. Back when Brock Osweiler was the fair haired boy I said nope, Trevor Siemian is The Quarterback to step into Peyton Manning’s shoes.
Most expect the Broncos will drop Mark Sanchez from the roster. The Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys have been named as teams that might pick him up as a backup quarterback. Deadline for the first cut down to 75 players is 2 p.m. Tuesday. They must cut it down to 53 before the regular season opening game.
The Broncos, now 2-1, play the Arizona Cardinals in Phoenix Thursday, Sept. 1, in the final game of the pre-season. The Cardinals lost 24-34 Sunday to the Houston Texans in Houston. They previously lost to the Oakland Raiders and the San Diego Chargers, so they are 0-3.
The Broncos open the regular season in a Super Bowl rematch Thursday, Sept. 8, playing the Carolina Panthers in Denver. The Panthers are 1-2 after losing close games to the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots and defeating the Tennessee Titans 24-16. The Panthers play the 1-2 Pittsburgh Steelers Sept. 1.
The Broncos play the Indianapolis Colts Sept. 18. The Colts are currently 1-2 in the pre-season.
