DenverBroncos-Logo 3Denver, Colo. — The Denver Broncos experimented with several quarterback candidates Saturday, Aug. 20, in their pre season game at Mile High Stadium with the San Francisco 49ers and lost 31 to 24.
The 49ers did not play their first string quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but their backup quarterbacks managed to win the game. They were former Mizzou Tiger Blaine Gabbert, rookie Jeff Driskel and Christian Ponder.
Broncos opened up with former Northwestern University quarterback Trevor Siemian, who drove his team down the field for a touchdown in 86 yards and 10 plays. Siemien connected with running back C.J. Anderson for a 19-yard touchdown to open the game 7-0.
49ersSiemian lost that lead when he tossed an interception to 49ers safety Eric Reid, who took it in for the touchdown to tie the score 7-7.
While the 49ers were busy scoring, the Denver Broncos were busy fumbling and throwing costly interceptions. By halftime the 49ers had run the score up to 17-10
Just before the half Bronco quarter back Mark Sanchez managed to fumble the ball in the red zone twice within 14 seconds; could be he set a record.
A third quarterback rookie Paxton Lynch, a former University of Memphis Tiger, took over for the Broncos in the third quarter and hung onto the ball until the end of the game.
Lynch also was intercepted, but he also managed to score two touchdowns, one to tight end John Phillips in the third quarter and one to rookie wide receiver Durron Neal, a St. Louis native and former Oklahoma Sooner, after the 2 minute warning to make the final score 31-24.
Other 49ers touchdowns were by tight end Vance McDonald, Ponder and wide receiver Dres Anderson.
All in all it was not a stellar game for the Denver Broncos .However when they play the Los Angeles Rams next week the Broncos might trot out some of their first string players. If that means they will play their first string quarterback next week, that could be a hard call.
The Broncos play the Rams 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, in Denver. The Rams beat the Kansas City Chiefs 21-20 Saturday and defeated the Dallas Cowboys 28-24 Aug. 13.
The Broncos close the pre-season playing the Arizona Cardinals Sept. 1 in Phoenix. The Cardinals are 0-2 after losing to the San Diego Chargers 19-3 Thursday and losing to the Oakland Raiders 31-10 Aug. 12.
Wonder if they will know who the starting quarterback is by the time they open the regular season Sept. 1in Denver against the Carolina Panthers?
